About Us

Wild Rose Sanctuary is a registered Non Profit Horse Sanctuary located on Prince Edward Island, Canada. We have saved 70 horses – wild mustang horses, domestic horses, ponies, mules and donkeys that were slaughterbound, neglected, starved, and just not wanted any more over this past year from killpens. This will be their forever home where they can heal from their trauma of killpens, salesbarns and owners not being responsible to care for them. They can live out the rest of their lives in peace now and know they will be cared for and loved. Over the past 20 years we have saved many horses from horse dealers, horse kill sales, and amish farms that no longer had places for horses that could not work any longer. When we moved to Prince Edward Island in 2016 from Ontario we had 2 transport trucks bring all 27 horses, ponies, mules and donkeys that we had saved to our new farm. Also tagging along on the trucks were 4 llmas, 2 pot belly pigs, 4 sheep, geese, chickens and ducks all which we had saved as well.

So many of these animals have a story, whether it be of not trusting humans, not knowing where they are going be tomorrow, if they are going to have food or knowing what they did wrong to deserve this fate. We felt compelled as a family that we had to do something to try and help these animals. As one person has said saving one horse will not change the world but will change the world for that one horse.

As well we want to raise public awareness to the horse slaughter industry. We purchased a mule last year that was advertised on the internet. We called the phone number listed on the ad. We were directed to contact a killpen to purchase this mule because in the next day she was shipping to Mexico for slaughter. We were totally blind to this whole horse slaughter industry. After managing to save this mule and speaking to several rescue people this was a whole new journey for us to try and save additional animals that were so deserving of being saved. We wished we could have saved so many more. We have a total of 97 animals that we saved. Our family of four is committed to look after each and everyone of these animals in caring for them and giving them good quality of life as long as they live.

If you are interested in volunteering for us we would love to have you. The more organized we are and the more commitment we have from our amazing volunteers, the better the experience will be for you and for the animals.
